Ukrainian first names

In Ukraine, parents typically pick a first name for their child based on personal preference and cultural tradition. Many parents choose a name that has a significant meaning, such as a saint's name or a name that has been passed down through the family. They may also consider the name's popularity and how it sounds with the surname. Some parents may seek the advice of a priest or family member before making a final decision.

The surname typically includes the suffix "-ovich" or "-ivna" for men and women respectively, indicating their father's first name. For example, if a man's father's name is Ivan, his surname would be Ivanovich. A woman with the same father would have the surname Ivanna. In some cases, a married woman may choose to adopt her husband's surname.
