Popular Swedish surnames
This table show popular Swedish surnames. In Sweden, surnames usually indicate the father's first name as a patronymic. For example, if a man's name is "Anders" and he has a son, his son's surname would be "Andersson". If he has a daughter, her surname would be "Andersdotter". This naming tradition is still followed in Sweden, although the use of hereditary surnames has also become common. Since 1901, it is also possible for a woman to adopt her husband's surname upon marriage, but it is not mandatory.
