Popular Russian surnames

This table show popular Russian surnames. In Russia, the surname is passed down through the family and typically follows a patronymic naming system, where the father's first name is used as the basis for the child's surname. For example, if a man named Ivan has a son, the son's surname would be Ivanov, which means "son of Ivan." Women also adopt this system, with the addition of a feminine ending, such as Ivanova for a daughter of Ivan. However, in recent years, some people have chosen to use their mother's maiden name as their surname.

Russian first names

In Russia, parents typically pick a first name for their child based on a combination of personal preference, family tradition, and cultural or religious significance. They may choose a name that is popular or has historical meaning, or one that has been passed down through generations in their family. Some parents may also consult with a priest or spiritual advisor to determine a suitable name for their child. Ultimately, the decision is a personal one and reflects the hopes and aspirations of the parents for their child's future.
