Russian first names

In Russia, parents typically pick a first name for their child based on a combination of personal preference, family tradition, and cultural or religious significance. They may choose a name that is popular or has historical meaning, or one that has been passed down through generations in their family. Some parents may also consult with a priest or spiritual advisor to determine a suitable name for their child. Ultimately, the decision is a personal one and reflects the hopes and aspirations of the parents for their child's future.

Popular Russian surnames

In Russia, the surname is passed down through the family and typically follows a patronymic naming system, where the father's first name is used as the basis for the child's surname. For example, if a man named Ivan has a son, the son's surname would be Ivanov, which means "son of Ivan." Women also adopt this system, with the addition of a feminine ending, such as Ivanova for a daughter of Ivan. However, in recent years, some people have chosen to use their mother's maiden name as their surname.
